What ⶳ means
On the GFF Bench layout, enter ZZa.
The GFF Bench keyboard manual maps that mnemonic to ⶳ. Unicode names do not standardize keyboard input; “Zzaa” identifies the character but does not tell you which keys to press.
A Unicode code-chart drawing is only a reference shape; fonts can draw ⶳ differently. Coverage of Ethiopic Extended varies by font, so a missing glyph may appear as a box.
What is ⶳ used for?
It writes one syllable in Bench.
Bench, also called Bencnon or Gimira, is a language with an Ethiopic-script spelling. ⶳ is part of its Bench “ZZ” series; read it within the word, where the surrounding syllables carry the word’s meaning.
Ethiopic writing has older roots than this Bench-specific series. South Arabian-script writing is attested in the region by the 8th or 7th century BCE; an indigenous Ethiopic abjad (a consonant-only script) appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE. By the 4th century CE, the script had developed consonant-plus-vowel syllable forms. The exact path from South Arabian writing remains debated, but the connection is historical, not just visual. Bench-specific additions adapt that syllabic script for Bench.
