What ⶱ means
Bench is a language spoken in Ethiopia. The 1998 encoding proposal places ⶱ in its retroflex ZZ series: syllables whose consonants are made with the tongue tip curled back.
The proposal says the series had been proposed by 1981, appeared in publications for at least a decade by 1998, and entered school systems in 1994.
Earlier Bench New Testament material used Ethiopic-script spelling; a Latin-based orthography was adopted in 2008. The 1998 proposal shows typewriter forms and says handwritten versions preferred a small v-shaped mark above the base glyph.
A Bench syllable written in Ethiopic script, not a chat reaction.
The name “zzu” is not a language-neutral pronunciation guide.

1Why does ⶱ show as a box?
The font likely lacks this glyph. ⶱ is Ethiopic text, so its display depends on font coverage; a font that supports Ethiopic Extended can render it.
