What ⶲ means
Bench is the better-supported label. ⶲ writes a Bench syllable in an extended Ethiopic row. A 1998 proposal identifies its retroflex ZH series (tongue curled back) and records use in Qay Wog, the Bench New Testament.
Ethiopic grew from South Arabian writing adapted for Ge’ez. Bench additions were proposed by 1981, in publishing use for at least a decade by 1998, used in schools by 1994, and included in Ethiopia’s 2002 standard.
An old chart grouped U+2DA0–U+2DDE under Sebatbeit. A 2018 report identified U+2DA0–U+2DBF, including ⶲ, as Bench; an ICANN list dated 23 September 2025 still labels it Sebatbeit.
