Flapping Bird

𜲖 is a bird beating its wings, preserved from the Sharp MZ-700’s game-sprite set. The old computer drew with character cells, so programmers built pictures from a stock of small images.

What 𜲖 means

It comes from the MZ-700’s European alternate display set.

Its earliest known home is the Sharp MZ-700, introduced in 1982. The computer drew with a grid of character cells rather than individual pixels; its European alternate set included ready-made game sprites. This bird occupied hexadecimal (base sixteen) display code F4.

The entry was not keyboard text: the BASIC programming language could show it by writing its display code to video memory and selecting the alternate set for that cell. Unicode keeps the old game sprite as one static character; “flapping” describes its pose.

Why does 𜲖 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
