What means
It marks the value one in a Garay number.
Garay is a writing system created in Senegal by Assane Faye for Wolof. It first appeared in print in January 1961. Faye used it in textbooks, folktales, maps, and a Qur’an with Wolof written between the lines.
Garay takes cues from Arabic and Latin: it is written right to left like Arabic, but its letters do not join. Faye designed it for African-language sounds and readers familiar with Arabic writing. As of 2026, Senegal’s official Wolof spelling uses Latin script; Wolofal, an Arabic-based way to write Wolof, is also used.
Why does a Garay number shift in mixed text?
The script direction and number order follow different rules.
Garay words run right to left, while digits in a number keep the higher-place digit on the left. So Garay 10 is written with one before zero even within a right-to-left line. Bidirectional-text support helps place the number correctly beside Latin or Arabic text.
