What means
It is Garay’s digit for two. Assane Faye created Garay in Senegal; it first appeared in print in January 1961. A Garay origin story links its creation to a radio speech by Léopold Sédar Senghor, president of newly independent Senegal. Faye designed a simpler script familiar to people who knew Arabic writing; Garay also draws on Latin. It differs from Wolofal, an Arabic-based way to write Wolof.
Faye’s manuscripts include textbooks, folktales and maps. Another Garay manuscript pairs the Qur’an with a Wolof translation between the lines. As of 27 April 2026, Latin remained the official script for Wolof in Senegal; Wolofal was also used. Garay has also been used for adult literacy in Wolof and Mandinka.
