garay digit three

Garay digit three

𐵃 means 3 in Garay, a modern script developed in Senegal for the Wolof language. Garay text runs right to left, but multi-digit numbers keep the familiar order, so 30 starts with three. The script’s first publications date to January 1961.

What 𐵃 means

It is Garay’s numeral for three.

As a digit, 𐵃 represents three; in a longer number, its position gives it its place value.

Assane Faye developed Garay in Senegal for the Wolof language. Its first publications date to January 1961. Arabic writing influenced Garay’s right-to-left direction and some design choices, but Garay is a separate script from Wolofal, an Arabic-based way to write Wolof, and from the Latin script officially used for Wolof in Senegal.

How did Garay digit three begin?

Assane Faye designed Garay to make Wolof easier to write.

The script represents Wolof’s sounds clearly, while its forms were made familiar to people who knew Arabic writing and simpler to learn. Faye’s surviving works include textbooks, folktales, maps, mathematics, moral and animal stories, and a Qur’an with Wolof written between its lines.

Later, women’s groups and adult literacy projects used Garay for Mandinka as well as Wolof; accounts also place it among African scripts developed in response to colonialism. As of 2026-09-14, Garay has a small user community, informal instruction, and online lessons and font resources.

Why does Garay digit three sometimes appear missing?

An empty box usually means the font has no Garay glyph.

A font index checked 2026-09-14 lists the LastResort font as covering Garay; fonts in other apps may not.

Neutral and numerical; in Garay text, this digit marks a quantity.

If the recipient does not read Garay, spell out “three”.
