What ٣ means
It means the number three. Arabic-Indic is a set of decimal digits used with Arabic-script writing. Within Arabic text, the places in a number run left to right: the ones place is on the right.
This decimal place-value method—each digit’s value depends on its position—came from India and spread through Arabic-speaking communities, where numeral shapes developed along different regional routes. In 662, Bishop Severus Sebokht described Indian calculation using nine signs, early evidence that the method was known in the region.
The 969 and 1082 copies preserve changing eastern forms: a mathematical text from 969 shows an early form, and an astronomy copy from 1082 shows two and three turned a quarter-turn. The historical account links the change to scribes writing down a scroll before rotating it to read. Calculations used a board dusted with fine material, so marks could be moved or erased; the mathematician al-Uqlidisi later explained how to do the arithmetic with pen and paper.
Why does ٣ look different from 3?
They are regional forms with the same value. The familiar 3 reached Europe through the western Arabic route, while Arabic-Indic digits developed in the eastern Arabic world. Persian uses a related Eastern Arabic-Indic set, with ۳ for three. All represent the value three, but each is a different character.
A font may draw ٣ with slightly different contours without changing its value. As of 2026, Windows digit-shape settings and Android number formatting can display Arabic-Indic forms for a formatted number; the visible shape alone does not tell you whether the underlying text contains ٣.
Neutral and numeric: it writes the value three in Arabic-Indic form.

No. A 2013 description of Arabizi—in which Arabic is written informally with Latin letters and numerals—uses Latin 3 for ع. This glyph, ٣, remains the digit for three.
