What means
It marks addition in Garay mathematical notation. Use it in expressions written with Garay; it is the addition operator in that system.
Garay's plus sign belongs to a wider mathematical system
Assane Faye created Garay in Senegal to write Wolof in a simpler right-to-left script familiar to people who knew Arabic writing. Garay first appeared in publications in January 1961. Wolof is also written with Latin letters and in Wolofal, another Arabic-based tradition. A 2022 encoding proposal describes literacy work for Mandinka and Wolof, including women's groups.
A manuscript by Faye shows slanted plus and minus forms for mathematics. The 2022 encoding proposal identifies this sign for addition, ordinary + for division, and the Garay capital letter YA for multiplication; it gives no separate first-use date for this individual plus sign.
Use Unicode input to enter the exact sign
Garay text runs right to left, while its digits run left to right inside numbers, so an expression can look reordered. The 2022 encoding summary lists no Garay-specific keyboard input method. Use your editor's Unicode code-point input or character map; U+10D8E identifies this exact sign.

In Garay arithmetic, + marks division; replacing changes the operation.

1Why does it show as a box?
It can. Your font may lack a Garay glyph. In April 2026, Garay orthography notes described a Garay font as an early prototype, so support can vary between apps and devices.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
