What ੪ means
It marks the number four in Gurmukhi writing.
Use it for counting and place value: ੪੦ is forty. Punjabi is also written in Shahmukhi, an Arabic-based script used in western Punjab; this digit belongs to Gurmukhi. As of 2026, Punjabi writing also uses Western digits such as 4, while older Punjabi texts use Gurmukhi numerals.
The wider Indian numeral tradition appears in Brahmi inscriptions and coins from the third century BCE, then in Gupta and Nagari forms. Gurmukhi developed through an earlier stage related to the Sharada script during the 10th–14th centuries. Landa scripts served household and trade writing; Gurmukhi was standardized in the mid-sixteenth century for Punjabi and Sikh scripture.
