What ᄎ means
It is a halfwidth compatibility form of the Korean jamo ㅊ. This spacing consonant character represents chieuch, but it does not join a following vowel to build a Hangul syllable. Unicode compatibility normalization relates it to the conjoining choseong character ᄎ.
Its history is part of Korean character-code development. A Unicode proposal traces the U+FFxx arrangement to Annex 4 of the Korean character standard KS C 5601 / KS X 1001 from 1987 onward. It also describes an almost identical set in a Xerox Character Code Standard associated with KS C 5601-1982. These codes addressed Korean text exchange through ASCII-oriented systems: N-Byte Hangul carried jamo in variable-length 7-bit streams using shift controls.
Why won’t my keyboard or font preserve it?
It belongs to a legacy compatibility layer. Halfwidth jamo serve older code-compatibility needs; they are not required to write Korean. A 2017 Unicode proposal says Korean input methods did not provide a way to enter halfwidth jamo, so a Korean keyboard typically produces ㅊ or a composed syllable instead.
The displayed shape depends on font support. Source Han Sans 2.000’s 2018 technical notes map halfwidth-jamo code points to compatibility-jamo glyphs, which can make the character appear full width. A font without a suitable glyph may show a missing-glyph box instead.
Use ᄎ when a legacy data source or layout requires this exact character. For ordinary Korean text, use ㅊ as an isolated consonant or write the intended syllable.
Technical and archival: it points to a character-code or layout requirement, not ordinary Korean spelling.
For ordinary Korean text, use ㅊ or the intended syllable; ᄎ may render at the wrong width.

1Why does ᄎ show as a box?
A font may lack a halfwidth Hangul glyph. A 2020 Noto CJK report records missing-glyph boxes or wrong-width output on Android 10 and Windows 10. If the halfwidth form is not required, ㅊ is the ordinary alternative.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
