hexagram for return

Hexagram for Return

24/64

䷗ means returning or turning back toward a sound path after decline. In the Yijing (I Ching), it marks the first, modest movement of renewal, not proof that a problem is fixed. If someone sends it, treat it as a reference to return or renewal; the symbol alone cannot tell you whether they mean a person, a habit, or a reading.

Text symbol

What ䷗ means

It means return, especially the first turn toward renewal.

The Yijing, also called the I Ching or Book of Changes, is a Chinese text used for divination. In a reading, return can mean correcting a mistake, resuming a practice, or reopening contact; the question and six-line reading shape which fits.

It is a turn back toward a course, not a rewind that restores everything unchanged.

Why is ䷗ a turning point, not a reset?

It begins a cycle of change; it does not finish one.

The divinatory practices behind the text trace to the Western Zhou, an early Chinese dynasty (1046–771 BCE). Later commentaries added philosophical and cosmological readings; by 135 BCE, they had joined the core text in the received Yijing. A bamboo manuscript from around 350 BCE preserves only seven characters from the Return chapter: an early textual witness, not the hexagram’s origin date.

Han-period commentators placed Return at the start of a waxing sequence, followed by Approach and Peace , then further hexagrams until the Creative . The active force called yang—represented by unbroken lines—grows along that half; after the waning half, the sequence returns to Return. So the symbol marks renewal’s beginning, not its finished result.

Reflective and tied to Yijing interpretation; it reads as a tradition-specific reference, not a plain comeback cue.

It suggests a possible return, not a promised reunion or completed repair.

Questions people ask

3

What does ䷗ mean if someone sends it to me?

Not necessarily a request to return. In a Yijing reading it can signal return or renewal, but the symbol alone does not say whether the sender means a relationship, a habit, or divination.

Why does ䷗ look different?

Because it is a text character: the font used for it supplies the drawing, so its line shapes may differ between devices.

Can ䷗ mean “come back” in an ordinary message?

It can work as personal shorthand, but a reader unfamiliar with the Yijing may miss the reference. Add words when you need the invitation to be clear.
