Ideographic Annotation One Mark

3/16

㆒ is a return mark in Japanese kanbun, the practice of reading Classical Chinese in Japanese order. It guides the reading; it does not mean the number one.

Text symbol

What ㆒ means

It marks where the reading turns back.

The kanbun one-two return marks (一二点) work in sequence: read through ㆒, then return to ㆓. They guide the reading; they do not count.

Kanbun notes let Japanese readers follow Classical Chinese in Japanese order without changing the source. A broader return-mark example is cited from 788; a Buddhist manuscript copied in 762 was marked around 830. A 2013 study describes Korean Gugyeol notes as a separate aid for reading Classical Chinese in Korean and says surviving evidence does not establish that they influenced Japanese marks.

Why does ㆒ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
