Kangxi Radical Walk

162/214

⾡ is the Kangxi form of the walk radical, a structural label for discussing Chinese-character components. Its old road-and-foot shape hints at movement. In ordinary characters, the component usually appears as 辶.

Text symbol

What ⾡ means

It marks movement or a route within a character.

⾡ is also called Kangxi radical 162. In a Chinese character, this walk radical contributes a movement clue; the other parts still determine the full meaning. An oracle-bone inscription—writing carved on animal bone or turtle shell—from the Shang period (ca. 1600–1046 BCE) shows a foot beside the old road sign 行. In later seal writing, an older Chinese script style, the road part was reduced to 彳, with 止, a foot sign, beneath it.

The Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi describes the form as walking and stopping in turns; Guangya and Yupian, also dictionaries, include a sense of running.

Why does ⾡ look different from 辵 and 辶?

They are related forms with different jobs in text.

⾡ is the Kangxi radical-block form. 辵 is its corresponding full written character; 辶 is the familiar component shape inside many characters. ⻌ is another specialized radical variant. Their related histories do not make them interchangeable.

A box or unfamiliar strokes can point to a font coverage problem: some installed fonts do not include this specialized radical block. The app's available fonts affect how it displays.

How do I type ⾡?

Enter its hexadecimal value, 2FA1. Windows Word/Outlook uses 2FA1 then AltX; macOS Unicode Hex Input uses Option plus 2FA1; GNOME/GTK uses CtrlShiftU, then 2fa1, then Space or Enter.

Specialist and typographic: in prose, it signals a dictionary or character-structure discussion.

In ordinary text, do not substitute ⾡ for 辶 or 辵.

Why does ⾡ show as a box?

It is usually a font coverage problem. The specialized radical block may be absent from the active font; try a font with CJK-radical support or a character viewer.
