What ⾣ means
⾣ is the dictionary radical form for 酉.
The Chinese graph 酉 began as a wine-jar drawing in oracle-bone inscriptions—early writing carved on animal bones and turtle shells—and bronze inscriptions. It was later borrowed as the tenth Earthly Branch, one of twelve traditional Chinese cycle signs used to mark time, and linked with the rooster and evening. The wine radical is number 164 in the Kangxi index.
The Unicode characters ⾣ and 酉 are related but not interchangeable. In Chinese, 酒, 酌, 醉, and 醋 use 酉 as an alcohol-related component.
A technical character-indexing form.
For ordinary wording, use 酉; ⾣ labels the radical entry.

1Why does ⾣ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
