What 𘬕 means
It denotes “hundred”; jau is the reconstructed reading.
A logogram represents a word or meaning rather than a sound alone. Unicode names these signs by code number, so its technical label identifies the entry but does not translate it.
When was the script created?
It was made to write Khitan. The traditional account credits Yelü Diela and dates it to about 925, with Uyghur-script influence reported. A 2026 study argues it was systematized later and names a 1051 epitaph as the earliest securely dated surviving inscription. It appears in Liao, Qara Khitai, and Jin inscriptions; Jurchen writing adapted Khitan models.

Questions people ask
1Why does Khitan text need special layout?
Because the script supports more than one orientation. Traditionally, it ran top to bottom in columns ordered right to left; it can also be set horizontally. Phonetic signs form word blocks, which need Khitan-specific layout rules.
