What 𘭗 means
It is a sound sign, not a translated word.
A 2016 comparison lists li, ri/rí and ar as proposed readings. They approximate Khitan sounds; the word context decides which fits.
How did the Khitan small script change over time?
It served Khitan writing, then lost official use.
Yelü Diela created it around 925 to write Khitan, reportedly drawing on Uyghur writing despite the scripts' different appearance. A 2025 study identifies the earliest known inscription as Yelü Yugulin Taishi's tomb text. Sound signs formed clusters to spell words; signs for whole words usually stood alone. It served beside Chinese characters and Khitan Large Script under the Liao, Western Liao, and Jin dynasties. In 1191, the Jin court formally abolished Khitan writing; Jurchen scripts later followed its model.
