What 𘭷 means
A sound value transcribed as uŋ.
Linguist Daniel Kane’s 2009 index records it as uŋ; read final ŋ like the “ng” at the end of English “sing.” Several small-script signs usually join to form one word-sized cluster.
When did Khitan small script take shape?
Traditional date: around 925; oldest secure text: 1051.
The History of Liao, a book about the Khitan-ruled empire, credits Yelü Diela, the founder’s younger brother, with devising it to write Khitan. A 2026 study argues it may have been systematized later, under Emperor Shengzong. Chinese characters shaped its forms; Uyghur writing shaped its sound system. The Liao used it alongside Chinese and a separate Khitan large script in epitaphs and official texts. After the Liao fell, the Jin dynasty, founded by the Jurchens, continued using Khitan script until an edict ended it in 1191.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘭷 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
