What 𘮎 means
It is a character in Khitan small script.
As of 2026, scholars have deciphered only part of the script. Some signs stand for words; others record sounds, usually grouped to spell a word.
When was Khitan small script created?
Tradition places its creation around 925.
Yelü Diela, a Khitan royal, is credited with creating it to write Khitan. Its forms draw on Chinese characters; accounts also link it to Uyghur writing, though the scripts differ. The oldest dated small-script epitaph, for Yelü Yugulin Taishi, is from 1051. These tomb texts honored Khitan royalty and aristocrats. Under the Jin dynasty, Jurchen rulers adapted Khitan models; an edict ended official use in 1191.
