What 𘮏 means
The script used word signs and sound signs. Logograms (whole-word signs) usually stood alone; phonograms (sound signs) formed clusters of two to eight per word.
The generic label for this codepoint does not identify this character's role, so read it within a deciphered word or inscription.
Why was Khitan Small Script created?
Its purpose was to write Khitan. Tradition credits Yelü Diela with creating it around 925; its design reportedly drew on Uyghur writing. It was used beside Chinese and another Khitan system called the Large Script.
A 2026 study argues the script took standard form later and identifies a 1051 tomb inscription as the oldest securely dated surviving example.
Official texts used it under Jin rule; use ended with the 1191 ban. Jurchen people later modeled their scripts on both Khitan scripts.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘮏 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
