What 𘮜 means

Its Khitan reading depends on the word around it.

Unicode’s label identifies the codepoint, not a translation.

When did Khitan writing begin?

Traditional accounts place the Small Script’s creation around 925.

The script was made to write Khitan. A 2026 study re-examines that date; the earliest securely dated surviving inscriptions are from the mid-11th century.

The Liao and Jin used both Khitan scripts. Jurchen scripts were modeled on them: large (1119), small (1138). Jin rulers abolished the Khitan scripts in 1191.

Why do Khitan signs form clusters?

A Khitan word often groups several signs into one cluster.

Most clusters start with a side-by-side pair and end with a centered sign or another pair; a less common pattern starts centered. Unicode supports vertical, horizontal or linear display, but arranged clusters need added layout support.

Why does 𘮜 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
