What 𘱖 means
It is a sound sign, not a whole-word meaning. The script also used signs for whole words, and scholars can read only part of it.
When did Khitan small-script inscriptions begin?
It was created around 925; dated inscriptions survive from 1053. Tradition credits Yelü Diela with creating it after seeing Uyghur writing, though the forms do not visibly resemble it. The small script wrote Khitan beside a separate large script. Chinese characters influenced its design. It was used under Liao, Western Liao, and Jin rule; Jurchen writers later adapted Khitan models.
Why does 𘱖 render differently?
Font and layout affect how Khitan signs group on screen. Khitan text used vertical columns and clusters. Fonts may arrange clusters vertically or show signs separately in a horizontal line, hiding their grouping. An empty box means the font cannot display 𘱖.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘱖 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
