What 𘱪 means
One reconstruction reads it as ud. Daniel Kane's study (2009) treats the ud at the end of the Khitan ruling clan's name Yelü as a possible plural form. Its Unicode name is a numeric identifier, not a translation.
The script was made to write Khitan. Traditional accounts credit Yelü Diela and report influence from the Uyghur script, used to write Uyghur. A 2026 study instead argues that full standardization came later under Liao Emperor Shengzong. Its sound signs are linked to Uyghur writing and its forms to Chinese characters. It developed beside the separate Khitan Large Script for the same language; both served official and literary writing under Liao. Small Script remained in use under Jin rule until an imperial order ended it in 1191.
