What 𘱬 means
One reconstruction gives 𘱬 the sound value ung2.
It is scholarly notation for an inferred sound, not an English translation. Khitan Small Script is only partly deciphered, so this remains a proposed reading.
Why was Khitan Small Script created?
To write Khitan, the language of a people in northern China.
Tradition dates it to around 925 in the Liao period and credits Yelü Diela. The script drew on Chinese writing and reportedly Uyghur script, though the two look little alike. It stayed in use under Western Liao and Jin. The earliest surviving epitaphs are dated 1053. Inscriptions also appear on mirrors and tallies. A Jin order ended official use in 1191. Inscriptions ran in vertical columns, top to bottom and right to left; digital layouts can show them horizontally.
