What 𘲯 means
It was one part of Khitan spelling. Yelü Diela is credited with creating the script; its reported inspiration was Uyghur writing, though the scripts share few visible forms. As of 2025, the earliest known Small Script inscription is a tomb epitaph for Yelü Yugulin Taishi, dated to the Chongxi reign period (1032–1055). Jurchen rulers kept using it after Liao rule ended; the Jin prohibited Khitan writing in 1191.
Many surviving examples are stone funeral inscriptions buried in Khitan nobles’ tombs. Sound signs join to spell words; historical texts arranged clusters in vertical columns read top to bottom and right to left. A linear font can show one glyph without laying out its word cluster.
