What 𘲶 means

Fifty, as a complete sign.

This logogram is a complete word sign; sound signs instead group vertically. Read 𘲶 for its number, not as a syllable.

How did Khitan small script develop?

It was made to write Khitan, alongside a separate large script.

Khitan was the language of a people in northern Asia. Traditional accounts date the script to 924 or 925; a 2026 study argues standardization came later. The earliest securely dated surviving inscription is a 1051 tomb text.

It was used in the Liao, Qara Khitai (Western Liao), and Jin states (10th–13th centuries). Its forms connect to Chinese characters, while Uyghur script (used by a Turkic people) is cited as inspiration. Jurchen writing adopted Khitan models in the 12th century; surviving examples include stone epitaphs.

Why does 𘲶 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
