Large Type Piece Diagonal Lower Right

551/686

𜸬 is a lower-right diagonal tile in Hewlett-Packard’s large-type character set, which built oversized letters from text cells. On 2640-series terminals—a screen and keyboard for a connected computer—the pieces displayed headlines in the 1970s. Alone, 𜸬 is just one stroke.

Text symbol

What 𜸬 means

It built headline letters from pieces that fit ordinary text cells.

Each tile occupied one character space, and its strokes met neighboring pieces to make full letters. 𜸬 supplies a descending stroke at the lower right; the complete shape depends on its position among the other tiles.

Why do large type pieces fail to join in Visual Studio?

Extra line spacing. A Visual Studio screenshot posted Jan 16, 2024 showed a gap between rows that stopped the pieces joining vertically.
