large type piece stem-12

Large Type Piece Stem-12

587/686

𜹐 comes from HP's system for building oversized terminal lettering. It supplies part of a stem, so other pieces are needed to complete the headline-sized letters.

What 𜹐 means

On HP 2640-series terminals, the Large set assembled headline-sized letters from separate shapes. A 1978 HP 2645A manual says each large character could take up to nine codes, with a utility to assemble a line; the source mapping places this piece in HP's Large set.

In plain text, matching pieces can form the same oversized lettering outside the old terminals. A font must contain these glyphs to draw them; otherwise this part may appear blank or as a missing-glyph box.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜹐 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
