What means
It lights one cell in a six-cell graphics tile. A sextant splits one character space into two columns and three rows; this pattern turns on just one piece.
“Separated” describes the rendering: background-colored gutters surround the lit block. The 1976 teletext specification contrasts this style with joined blocks; a display control selected between the two modes.
The first teletext specification was agreed in 1974. Six-cell characters could be placed side by side to build simple pictures in text pages; Unicode calls these tiles sextants and gives the separated pattern a character of its own.

Questions people ask
1Why does show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
