separated block sextant-1346

Separated six-cell mosaic 1346

What 𜹽 means

It fills cells 1, 3, 4 and 6 in a two-column, three-row grid. Here, “sextant” means a six-cell mosaic; in teletext art, the tile is also called a sixel. The digits identify the lit positions.

These tiles belong to semigraphics: pictures assembled from ready-made blocks inside text cells. British teletext emerged in the early 1970s; its 1976 broadcast specification defined a 2 × 3 mosaic mode for simple on-screen pictures. BBC Ceefax used mosaics for diagrams, graphs and logos; in separated mode, gaps let broad fills read as patterned areas. France's Minitel videotex service also used six-cell blocks from the early 1980s. Unicode's 2021 proposal carried joined and separated forms into a standardized character set. In both services, each tile worked as part of a larger picture.

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
