The pattern comes from Britain’s early 1970s Teletext service, where six-cell character tiles drew simple pictures; its 1974 specification distinguished separated tiles with narrow gaps. A 2021 Unicode proposal sought distinct characters so emulators and existing software could preserve that mode. Its joined-cell counterpart is .
