Separated Block Sextant-15

604/686

𜹡 is a separated Teletext mosaic: a six-cell graphic with cells 1 and 5 lit, with narrow background gaps around the blocks. British Teletext used such tiles for simple pictures on TV information pages; this character preserves the gapped form for digital text and emulation.

What 𜹡 means

In the six-cell tile, only cells 1 and 5 are lit.

Teletext began in Britain in the early 1970s as an information service carried in unused lines of analog TV signals. Its 23 mosaic tiles let each text cell double as a tiny graphic; this pattern is one of those tiles.

The 1974 Broadcast Teletext specification distinguished joined mosaics from separated ones, which left narrow bands of page background around each piece. Unicode gives the separated look its own character so emulators and software using a private-use range (codes a program assigns to its own symbols) can preserve the spacing.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜹡 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
