separated block sextant-4

Separated Block Sextant-4

This is a tiny tile for drawing block graphics: it fills one of six positions in a 2-by-3 cell, with background gaps around the mark. Teletext combined mosaics like this into pictures; on its own, the tile carries no fixed message.

What 𜹘 means

It is one part of a low-resolution drawing, not a standalone sign.

Here, “sextant” means a graphics tile divided into six cells, arranged two across and three down; “4” identifies the active cell. Teletext, an information service that sent text pages to television screens, used mosaics like this for simple pictures. Work on teletext began in the UK in the early 1970s.

The separated style leaves a narrow band of background between its block pieces. Early teletext made that spacing a display setting on mosaic characters; the later Unicode repertoire records separated patterns as their own characters, so emulators and older software can preserve them directly.

Why does 𜹘 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
