Separated Block Sextant-246

𜹺 is a teletext mosaic tile: one small piece of a picture. Its separated version keeps thin strips of background between lit areas, preserving the look of old graphics pages.

What 𜹺 means

A mosaic tile with its right column lit. Here, a sextant is one text cell split into six blocks, two across and three down; 2, 4 and 6 mark the lit cells. Neighbors can join to sketch maps, charts, lettering or pictures.

British teletext’s shared format was agreed in 1974. Its mosaic tiles let text-only TV pages show maps and charts; artists also used them for lettering and full-page art. A control code—an instruction in the page data—switched between joined and separated displays, leaving narrow background gutters. The 2021 Unicode proposal asked for separate characters so emulators could recreate teletext and existing programs could keep their custom mappings.

Why does 𜹺 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
