separated block sextant-13

Separated Block Sextant-13

𜹕 is a tiny two-cell tile from Teletext, a system for sending text and simple graphics to televisions. It contributes one patch of a low-resolution picture; preserving its separated outline later mattered to emulators and software that reproduced Teletext pages.

What 𜹕 means

It fills cells 1 and 3 in a six-cell grid.

Here, “sextant” means a graphic tile divided into six cells. These 2×3 mosaic characters combine into coarse drawings, maps, and charts; this one supplies a small patch rather than a complete pictogram.

When did Teletext use these mosaic tiles?

They came from British Teletext, developed in the early 1970s.

Teletext broadcast pages of information and simple graphics to analog TVs. A 1974 Broadcast Teletext specification describes graphic characters as six cells; a control could display them joined or with background between them.

Mosaics first served maps and charts; by 1975 the same grid also appeared in whole-page art experiments. In 2021, a Unicode proposal records users asking for individual separated characters so emulators and older software could preserve the same patterns.

How does it differ from the contiguous tile?

Its matching contiguous tile has the same cells, but they touch.

The difference between separated and contiguous block sextants is the gutter: 🬄 shows the same two cells connected, while 𜹕 leaves narrow background lines between them. The gaps change the outline when these tiles are combined into a picture.

Why does 𜹕 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
