Large Type Piece Stem With Left Joint

564/686

𜸹 is one tile for building an oversized letter: its stem joins another piece on the left. HP terminals used the set for headline-size text; alone, this character is only one stroke.

What 𜸹 means

It contributes one joined stroke to a larger letter. Its left joint connects to a neighboring piece in the large-type design.

HP's 2620 and 2640 terminals used the large-type set for headlines. At an HP users' conference in 1976, the newly introduced set was described as making letters about three character cells tall and three times the normal width.

Unicode preserves these pieces as text characters, not as a command to enlarge a line. Their strokes form a large letter only when compatible pieces are laid out together.

The font being used may not include this character's drawing. Microsoft added large-type pieces to Cascadia Code in its April 2024 update; other fonts need their own glyphs for them.
