What means
It supplies a diagonal stroke inside a larger letter.
In the 1970s, Hewlett-Packard’s 2640 and 2620 text terminals used large-type pieces to build oversized headlines. An HP manual printed in January 1977 lists an optional Large Character Set; a 2021 Unicode proposal maps this tile to the set’s “HP (Large) 21” entry.

Questions people ask
1Why won’t large type pieces join vertically?
The font may lack the character, or row spacing may separate the pieces. In a January 2024 Visual Studio example, extra line gaps prevented vertical joins.

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
