left half lower one quarter block

Left Half Lower One Quarter Block

670/686

𜺣 marks a small patch at the bottom left of one character-sized slot in a text grid. Older computers used block characters for screen pictures; emulators preserve that style.

What 𜺣 means

It marks the cell’s lower-left corner. It fills half the bottom quarter. Joined with other pieces, it makes semigraphics: rough pictures built from character tiles.

For old home computers from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, block characters could draw in text cells where pixel graphics were limited. Teletext—TV pages broadcast as text and simple mosaics—used them too. Unicode encoded basic blocks and box-drawing characters in 1991 for compatibility; a 2021 proposal added more legacy computer and teletext sets for preservation and emulation.

Questions people ask

1

Do fonts draw 𜺣 the same way?

No. Unicode 16.0’s chart gives an example, not a required shape, so fonts can differ. A 2021 Cascadia Code discussion notes that font fallback can misalign nearby block pieces.
