left-pointing energy wave

Left-Pointing Energy Wave

121/686

The left-pointing energy wave symbol is a game sprite from the European alternate display set on Sharp MZ home computers. On the MZ-700, released in 1982, its characters couldn't be typed from a keyboard; programs wrote their display codes to screen memory. Three counterparts point up, right, and down. Unicode's 2021 proposal named it because old charts left sprites unnamed and preserved the set for moving text between systems.

What 𜱸 means

𜱸 is the left-pointing energy wave. Unicode classifies it as an “other symbol” — Unicode's shelf for signs that are neither maths, money nor punctuation and files it in the Symbols for Legacy Computing Supplement block; this site shelves it under Lines & boxes.

Its appearance depends on the font and text styling.

How it is encoded

𜱸 is a single code point, U1CC78. In HTML that is 𜱸, and in CSS \1CC78.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜱸 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
