up-pointing energy wave

Up-pointing energy wave

𜱹 is an upward-pointing picture from the Sharp MZ-700’s European alternate display set; a message’s context gives it a modern reading. The early-1980s home computer kept pictures in a second screen-character bank, and this one corresponded to code 0x61. It was placed on-screen through software rather than by a normal keypress.

What 𜱹 means

It began as a game picture on an MZ home-computer screen.

Sharp MZ character cells could show small pictures as well as letters. The European alternate display set was a second bank of ready-made screen pictures; this upward wave belonged to its game sprites.

Character-cell pictures could be arranged across the screen and refreshed to animate a scene. Unicode preserves this MZ form as text so old character data can be converted and emulators can reproduce it.

How do I type the up-pointing energy wave?

As of 2026, enter 1CC79 then press Alt+X in Word for Windows.

Why does 𜱹 appear as an empty box?

It can happen when the app’s font lacks this glyph. Choose a font that covers U+1CC79; the text still contains 𜱹 even when the app shows a fallback box.

Could I type 𜱹 from a Sharp MZ keyboard?

No. On the early-1980s MZ-700, this belonged to the European alternate display set, not the normal keyboard characters. A BASIC program could show it with POKE, a command that writes a value into screen memory.
