left three quarters upper one quarter block

Left Three Quarters Upper One Quarter Block

676/686

𜺩 is a block-fill tile: it fills the upper quarter of one text character’s space, across three quarters of its width from the left. It belongs to the toolkit for making coarse pictures out of text. If a font lacks its glyph, it may appear blank or as a fallback box.

What 𜺩 means

It fills one small part of a text character’s space.

Unicode already had block and shading shapes in 1991 to preserve compatibility with computer character sets and terminal emulators, programs that reproduce older text screens. A 2021 proposal expanded the collection for more home-computer and teletext material.

Teletext, a service for sending text and simple graphics to television, took shape in the early 1970s; home computers from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s also used block graphics. Semigraphics makes pictures by filling parts of each on-screen character space and joining neighboring spaces. This character supplies one precise fill pattern for that grid.

Questions people ask

1

Why does it show as a box or blank?

Your font may not include a drawing for this character. A blank or box is a display fallback; it does not replace the character stored in the text.
