What 🠀 means
Windows: Alt + X; Linux GTK: Ctrl + Shift + U.
🠀 has no dedicated keyboard key. In Word or Outlook, type 1F800, then press Alt + X; in Linux apps that use GTK (a desktop toolkit), press Ctrl + Shift + U, type 1F800, then press Enter or Space.
As of 2026, macOS's built-in Unicode Hex Input accepts only four-digit codes; use Character Viewer for 🠀.
Why does 🠀 look like a box?
The selected font must contain this arrow to draw it.
Wingdings is a family of icon fonts designed by Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow in 1990–1991 for personal-computer interfaces; Microsoft released it in 1992. In 2011, a Unicode proposal matched 🠀 to glyph w-3153, style A1, and aimed to make such symbols searchable and usable across platforms without a private font mapping.
As of 2026, support for Supplemental Arrows-C remains uneven: if a font lacks this character, it may display a box; fonts that contain it can still draw it with different proportions.
What does 🠀 mean when someone sends it?
It points left; the message supplies what lies that way.
With a nearby label, it can point back to a previous step or show that the item on the right leads toward the one on the left. Sent alone, it gives direction without a destination; ask what the sender means to point at.
At home in labelled diagrams and interfaces; in a chat, it needs a label to be clear.
A box means the receiving font cannot draw 🠀, so its leftward cue is lost.

1Why does 🠀 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
