What ᤔ means
It marks syllable-initial m.
Limbu final m uses the small form ᤶ.
How was the Sirijanga script revived?
Tradition credits it to Sirijunga Hang in the 9th century, though its origin is uncertain. An early 18th-century alphabet book and 1850s Darjeeling writings survive; the modern form took shape in Kalimpong in 1925.
It recorded Limbu oral and ritual knowledge, including mundhum, its oral ritual tradition. Suppression and Devanagari dominance narrowed its use. Revival and publishing after 1990 strengthened its role as a marker of Limbu identity. It descends from earlier Limbu script; Devanagari influenced later revisions. A proposed link to Lepcha or Tibetan scripts remains unsettled.
