What ꓞ means

ꓞ is a Lisu consonant pronounced “ts” with a puff of air. In Fraser Lisu, it has an inherent “a”; other vowels use separate letters, and tone letters follow the syllable.

The recognizable Fraser script took shape between 1908 and 1914. Karen evangelist Sara Ba Thaw devised early forms; James O. Fraser and Lisu pastors later revised them for Lisu-language literacy and Christian materials, including catechisms, hymnbooks, Gospel texts, and a New Testament.

The script's role broadened into education, publishing, media, and religion. In China, Fraser or Old Lisu became a public and educational writing system alongside pinyin-based Lisu; other Lisu traditions included a syllabary and Burmese-based writing. A 2021 fieldwork account describes Lisu Christian hymnbooks as part of worship and communal reading, and as markers of Lisu Christian identity.

Why does ꓞ look like a turned F?

Lisu’s early letterforms were based on Latin-shaped capitals, with some rotated. Lisu uses one form per letter, not separate uppercase and lowercase sets. That visual borrowing does not make ꓞ interchangeable with Latin F or turned capital F Ⅎ.

Digital text stores ꓞ as its own Lisu character; placing it beside Latin F does not turn it into F. A Lisu font can display it, but a font does not provide a keyboard.

For Lisu readers, ꓞ is part of writing used in literacy, publishing, education, media, and worship; others may notice its Latin-like shape first.

Don't substitute it for F: ꓞ is a separate Lisu letter with a different sound.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ꓞ show as a box?

A box usually means the receiving font or app cannot show the Lisu glyph. The text may still contain ꓞ; font coverage varies by app.

Is ꓞ the same as a turned F?

No. ꓞ is a Lisu character; Ⅎ is a separate turned Latin F. Treating one as the other changes the character in the text.
