lower left quadrant chess bishop

Lower-left chess bishop tile

201/686

𜳈 is the bottom-left tile of a small chess-bishop picture from the Sharp MZ’s European alternate character set. The full picture used four screen cells; Unicode preserves the fragment for old character data and emulator graphics.

What 𜳈 means

One cell held part of a pre-drawn game picture. Sharp’s MZ-700 was a home computer with a fixed character grid. Its European alternate display set included the four bishop tiles; software selected these cells for display rather than typing them as ordinary text.

Place the four tiles in a 22 grid, with 𜳈 at bottom-left. A fixed-width font keeps them aligned. Unicode preserves this fragment in older text and emulator graphics.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜳈 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
