What means
A right arrow knocked out of a filled square. In Unicode names, “negative” means reversed colours: instead of a dark arrow on a light page, the square is solid and the arrow is the light shape inside it. It reads the same as the ordinary : go right, next, continue.
It belongs to a set of four, one for each direction, added for compatibility with older computer terminals and character sets, whose screens built pictures out of character-sized cells. Unicode links it to the plain so text from those systems keeps its meaning. Outside retro-computing and documents converted from it, you will mostly meet it in symbol lists, used as a bold “next” marker.

Questions people ask
2Why do I see an empty box instead of ?
Your font doesn't have it. The character arrived in Unicode 16.0 (2024), and as of 2026 many fonts still lack it. Switch to a font with legacy-computing symbols or use instead.
Is an emoji?
No. It is a text symbol with no colour emoji design, so it looks like whatever your font draws.
