What ߺ means
It stretches joined writing or links repeated forms, depending on spaces. Arabic tatweel, also called kashida, is its functional counterpart: both lengthen writing without adding a sound. NKo layout guidance (2023) documents a literal space on each side when ߺ marks te-kerende.
N’Ko’s first reported appearance was at Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire, on 14 April 1949; the date is treated as an assigned milestone. Sulemaana Kantè created it to support literacy in West Africa’s Manding languages, education in people’s first languages, and Islamic learning.
