outlined digit one

Outlined Digit One

It’s the number one drawn with a hollow outline. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the European character set for Sharp MZ home computers kept outlined digits apart from plain ones and used them in logos and artwork; Unicode preserves this one as a separate character.

What 𜳱 means

Compatibility normalization can turn it into plain 1.

This character has a font-style mapping to the ordinary digit 1. Unicode’s NFKC and NFKD modes fold such presentation variants into plain text; NFC and NFD preserve the outlined form.

Why does 𜳱 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
