Right-Facing Bassinet

74/686

The right-facing bassinet is a tiny game graphic in the European alternate character set of Sharp’s MZ-700, a built-in second set of screen pictures. The MZ-700 reached Europe in 1983; its pre-drawn bassinet picture has a matching left-facing partner, . Unicode preserves the graphic as text, but the original MZ-700 keyboard could not enter it directly; a program selected it from alternate display slot 1C.

What 𜱉 means

𜱉 is the right-facing bassinet. Unicode classifies it as an “other symbol” — Unicode's shelf for signs that are neither maths, money nor punctuation and files it in the Symbols for Legacy Computing Supplement block; this site shelves it under Lines & boxes.

Its appearance depends on the font and text styling.

How it is encoded

𜱉 is a single code point, U1CC49. In HTML that is 𜱉, and in CSS \1CC49.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜱉 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
