What 🮍 means
Use Unicode hex input in GNOME/GTK or Word.
In 2026 documentation, GNOME/GTK uses CtrlShiftU, then 1FB8D and Enter or Space; Word uses 1FB8D followed by AltX.
It shades the right half of a text cell with a medium-gray pattern. A 2019 Unicode proposal traces it to character sets for the Mattel Aquarius, Ohio Scientific, and Sharp MZ computers; semigraphic blocks on those systems worked like coarse pixels for screen graphics.
Why does 🮍 show as a box?
Your font or terminal may lack its glyph.
A 2026 terminal-support tracker found that some emulators draw legacy blocks themselves while others rely on fonts. A blank box or uneven seams can mean a rendering gap; the underlying character can still be present.

1Why does 🮍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
